Is there a psychologist out here that specializes in bi-polar/PTSD/and depression? I am having med's problems!

So the diagnosis I get is PTSD/ possible bipolar II(more depression less, ups) and Social anxiety disorder, G.A.D and general depression!

Problem I have been prescribed Zoloft, Lexapro, Lamictal,Clonazapan, and Effexor XR! With no success!

I have had bad reactions to all but the clonazapan but my pshycologist wants me to find a longer lasting med! I am reluctant to try more SSRI's due to the side effects (which is why I quit all of the above in the first place!) Side effects include loss of appitite to the point I have to remind myself to eat, sexual libito gone, And EXTREAM sweating/hot feeling, I cant wear a sweater even if it's twenty below! Should I see an Endocronologist, get tested for homrmone varients, or anything else?

I really need some answers! I had my first panic attack tonight B/C I am so upset about this!

Currently take: Yaz(b.control pills), Clonazapan 3xday(1mg) and weening off Effexor XR.

Looking to solve the heat problem 1st and foremost! Help if you can!

The sweats are most likely a side effect of the SSRI's and Wellbutrin-when I took Wellbutrin combined with an SSRI several years ago I could actually clock the sweats every twelve hours corresponding to about 1-2 hours after each dose.

If you have had multiple side effects from several SSRI's already it is likely that you will continue to experience the same with all meds in that class of drugs. You may want to discuss a trial on the older tricyclic meds for depression or using an MAOI if you can monitor your diet and be careful about the restrictions, although the Ensam patch has fewer dietary contraindications.

I'm suspicious of the Bipolar diagnosis as it tends to be seriously overdiagnosed, especially with the popularity of Bipolar II nowadays which I think is often misdiagnosed. If you have PTSD, the treatment of choice is really therapy including both CBT and EMDR as optimal modalities. A benzodiazepine (Clonazepam) used prn can ameliorate the symptoms of hypervigilance and panic. Try to find a therapist with experience in treating trauma related disorders as this is likely your best bet. In my experience, the other co-morbid symptoms generally recede and disappear with effective treatment of the PTSD which is quite treatable. There has been recent research showing efficacy for propranolol to treat PTSD, even in older traumas, so that might be something to discuss with your doc. It is still an off-label use of the med, but the results of recent studies are promising. Here's a link to the 60 Minutes website which did an excellent piece on it:

Good Luck!

Reply:have you had your thyroid tested?? I advise you to get it tested even if its just to rule it out as a problem, as for the bipolar have you tried a different mood stabilizer like carbamazepine as I had very little side effects off that one. I do understand as I always seem to get a whole list of things going on when I start on meds. Also there is a therapy that might help you its called DBT (Dialectical behavioral therapy) it was originally for the treatment of borderline personality disorder but has now been found to help with many other disorders including bipolar. take care
