My son is 11 and in middle school; he is in trouble because he is always late to his classes!?

He's obese due to his medical disorder... due to his size it takes him a LONG time to walk between classes, it really makes him work up a sweat. What can I do for him?

My son is 11 and in middle school; he is in trouble because he is always late to his classes!?
Get a doctor to sign a letter stating he needs extra time for walking. The school can not hold him resposible if it is medically related.
Reply:Get an excuse from his doctor and set up an appointment to met with the school principal.
Reply:Thats so sad, Im very sorry to hear that.

Im not sure what you can do except talk to the principal or the person in charge of scheduling to have his class rooms closer togther. But that might not always be possible.

Train him-

Maybe walk with him after school so he can prepare himself to walk fatser.
Reply:Getting a note saying hey my son is big so can you excuse him for being late to class will probably embarrass your son. If I was in your situation I would secretly talk to his teachers tell them about his disorder and then the teacher should understand :) or you could get his schedule changed so all his classes are closer together
Reply:tell him to leave his last class as soon as possible so he can get to the next one on time.(he should try to be one of the first students to exit the room.) if he can avoid going to his locker, i would encourage that. (it takes too much time to go to your locker while trying to make it to your next class.) buy him a nice bag or something that makes it easier to carry his school supplies. that way, walking is easier for him.

i also suggest talking to his teachers about his condition.
Reply:sounds like his weight is a medical issue. I would get a note from a Doctor and see if he qualifies for special treatment. Like getting a five minute start to and from classes, this is scary because getting in trouble is probally embarrassing to the poor kid and kids can be so cruel, as his parent you have to be his advocate the school surely won't help unless there is a note on file. I will pray for you and your family. Please don't wait to intervene for him. Good luck
Reply:From a teacher's perspective, a child being late to class everyday is usually a sign that they are doing something they are not supposed to be doing during passing periods. If this is not the case with your son, then as a teacher I would want to know that. If you get a note from his doctor and turn it in to the principal then they are required by law to allow him more time in between classes. Again, as a teacher, he will be missing vital time in the classroom so this should be minimized. He needs to be walking at home as well in order to get in better shape.
Reply:If he has a medical disorder, he should be able to have an IEP (Individual Education Plan). Call the guidance counselor and principal about setting up an IEP meeting. What will most likely happen is that an accommodation will be made for him, such as allowing him 2 or 3 extra minutes to get to class. In turn, the IEP will outline goals for his "team" to help him reach. For instance, he might get services through a physical therapist provided by the school system to help him lose weight and get in better shape. It will be a team effort. Good luck.
